The government of India is planning to make Aadhaar mandatory for all 84 schemes covered under the direct subsidy benefit transfer scheme from June 30. After this date, only those people who have Aadhaar can avail subsidies from the government.

Aadhaar will be mandatory from the mid-day meal scheme at schools to government scholarships.

Backward caste students can avail subsidised education loans and venture capital funds or credit enhancement guarantees for startups through Aadhaar. Even NGOs working for the welfare of Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes, alcoholics and old people will have to furnish Aadhaar to avail government benefits.

Salaries of teachers and other staff under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan will be paid after going through their Aadhaar cards.  The Health Ministry has also made Aadhaar mandatory for paying staff and accredited social health activists under the National Health Mission. Other schemes brought under Aadhaar’s ambit include the Swadhar Greh Scheme to rehabilitate woman victims of sexual exploitation.
