15 lakh duplicate Aadhaar card holders caught in Haryana

The linking of Aadhaar card with ration cards has started bearing results in the state of Haryana as the government has managed to catch as many 15 lakh duplicate Aadhaar number holders to whom the ration has been stopped by the Food and Civil Supplies Department.

This step was taken under the National Food Security Act, 2013 to eliminate fake beneficiaries. This is expected to bring transparency in public distribution system (PDS) under which a total of 1.32 crore people are enrolled in the state.

The activity of Aadhaar seeding of the targeted public distribution system (TPDS) was completed by July 4 and had covered 88 per cent f the total ration cards.  Following this, it was found that a lot of people were issued ration cards more than once which led to so many duplicity or repetition of the same Aadhaar number.

The exact reason for this discrepancy has not been detected but there seems to be a possibility that individuals have more than one ration card and provided same Aadhaar at other ration depots. There is also a possibility of error by the data entry operators.
