Vijai Sharma CICSenior most Information Commissioner Vijai Sharma, a 1974 batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

Sharma superannuated as Environment Secretary. He has been serving as the Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission since 2012.

His appointment is in keeping with the convention of elevating the senior-most Information Commissioner as the chief. He is also an Expert Member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The issue of CIC appointment snowballed into a controversy after the post remained vacant for several months, prompting the Congress to train guns at the ruling NDA Government. Congress President Sonia Gandhi raised the matter in the Lok Sabha last month, hurling accusation at the Narendra Modi government of undermining the post by keeping it vacant.

A committee led by Prime Minister Modi had finalised the CIC last week.
