Government of India is trying to simplify the procedure for Aadhaar number generation. Applicants can go directly to bio-metric enrolment camps and register for Aadhaar number rather than going to NPR camps first.

Earlier, people had to first go to the national population register (NPR) camps and register personal details. These camps were being organised by Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) across various localities of city. After digitisation of data, people were being called in for bio-metric enrolment to Aadhaar camps.

Since the process was long and strenuous, not many could get their Aadhaar numbers made timely. Till date, only around 13 lakh persons in Lucknow and about 1 crore in UP have Aadhaar numbers. Since it was a prerequisite for implementing DBTL scheme, GOI had to withdraw the plan due to incomplete preparations as there are about 45 lakh residents in the city.

To avoid further delay, GOI has instructed Census department to stop the national population register (NPR) work and asked Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to set up camps directly in Lucknow for bio-metric enrolment rather than going through NPR process. PK Agarwal, assistant director general of UIDAI, regional office in Lucknow said “to speed up the process of registration, GOI has recently issued orders to start bio-metric enrolment directly in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh. We have been given a year’s time to generate Aadhaar numbers in all these states.”

UIDAI’s Lucknow regional office has set up five camps across the city. People who have not submitted bio-metric details like fingerprints, iris image, photograph yet need to appear in these camps carrying photocopy and original documents of identity proof, address proof and date of birth proof. After giving bio-metric details, people can check for their Aadhaar number status on website, residents.uidai.net.in, after 20-25 days.

The website would show whether the number is generated or not and if it is, people can download it from the site. Or else, it would be dispatched by UIDAI to one’s residence in 20 days. Those who have already enrolled for Aadhaar numbers need not apply again.
