A workshop on urban governance was organized in Kolkata on Tuesday where chairpersons and mayors of several municipalities and municipal corporations of the state were present.

The progress of schemes that was discussed in the meeting were the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission ( JNNURM) scheme, Swarna Jayanti Sahari Rojkar Yojona scheme, the urban livelihood mission scheme, housing for urban poor, national social assistance programme and the BSUP schemes.

Apart from discussing on the progress of these schemes, it was also reviewed as to how the municipalities and municipal corporations were functioning to provide the basic civic services like water supply, solid waste management, maintenance and upkeep of roads etc and whether they were facing any difficulties in providing the services.


Some high profile municipalities like the Bidhannagar municipality is facing problems in important civic matters. For example, the Bidhannagar municipality has been facing trouble to collect property tax. The civic authorities said that they were trying to re-start collecting property tax from next month. Also, many of the civic bodies were facing problems to properly manage solid waste.

In the last such review meeting with the representatives of various municipalities located within Kolkata metropolitan area, the government’s beautification plans was laid down before the civic bodies. It was also discussed as to how the civic bodies can develop street lighting and illumination in their jurisdiction areas.
