Automated clearing system enabling people to pay their municipal and water bills through credit cards was launched in Oman recently. The agreement for introducing this new system was signed by Hamad bin Suleiman Al Wahaibi, Under-secretary for Regional Municipalities, and Abdulrazaq Ali Issa, BankMuscat's Chief Executive.

The services include building permits, health certificates for commercial and industrial establishments, retail outlet licence, drinking water, well drilling and all other fees. Payees will not be charged for the services. And the ministry will provide processing machines at municipal offices and also prepaid cards. The project is part of a drive to computerise municipal transactions.

The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources said under the scheme, being implemented in cooperation with a local bank; citizens and residents can pay bills and fees for all services rendered by the ministry through a credit card (Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club).
