Vietnam ICT Ministry drafting State IT application scheme

The Ministry of Information and Communication of Vietnam is finalising a draft on the application of IT in state agencies in 2009-2010 as well as on the vision for Vietnam's e-government, which will be submitted to the government for approval later this month.

The scheme comprises two phases: 2008 and 2009-2010, which will replace the discredited Project 112. Fir the first part, the IT application in state agencies for this year was approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in March and it is being implemented by all state agencies at grassroot and central levels. The Ministry is now working on the second part, which would be presented to the Prime Minister on this month. According to the ministry, the percentage of State employees who are equipped with computers at work is around 68 percent at ministries and central state agencies and 40 percent at provinces and cities. Information network set up at stage agencies work on internal information exchange systems. At this moment, 58 of 64 provinces and 20 out of 22 ministries in Vietnam have their own websites. Only the provinces of Quang Ninh, Dak Nong, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh and Dien Bien are not online.
