Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, India announced the establishment of 60,000 Common Service Centres (CSCs) in rural India by the end of the financial year.

There are over 8,000 broadband Internet kiosks which are already established through a Public Private Partnership (PPP)model.

This announcement is part of the National eGovernace Plan (NeGP) of the Department of Information Technology (IT).

The Union Minister for Communications and IT, Shri. A. Raja said in the Consultative Committee on National e-Governance Plan in New Delhi that the State Wide Area network (SWAN) scheme has been approved at a total cost of Rs 3,334 crore.

NeGP aims at the connectivity of State Headquarters, District Headquarters and over 6,000 Blocks throughout India. The completion of the project would connect over one lakh government offices across the country.

A body under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister is formed whcih would be responsible for prescribing deliverables and milestones.
