Very soon the desire to have power bills in your e-mail, computer-generated voice mail on your phone sending alert about the last date of payment etc. can come true. Thanks to Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh who has roped in Infosys co-chairman Nandan Nilekani to infuse IT to energise the power sector. Ramesh, however, does not want the role of IT to be confined only to consumer interface of utilities but his idea is to use infotech for plugging slip pages and improve efficiency of the entire system through real-time data monitoring.

The minister holds the view that IT-enabled metering and real time monitoring would ensure that each unit produced is delivered and not lost in transit. He pointed out that India notches a national average of 25-35% transmission lost rate, which is, on most occasions, due to unmetered usage or theft.
