The Uttar Pradesh Government has asked Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and National Informatics Centre (NIC) to soon complete networking across the state, so that the state government can launch the Uttar Pradesh State Wide Area Network (UPSWAN) on January 1, 2008.

According to State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner (I.D.C.)Atul Kumar Gupta, 241 tehsils and 574 blocks in all the 70 districts of Uttar Pradesh would be connected to the wide area network from January 1, 2008. He stated that the site selected for the UPSWAN project in the districts should be completed by November 15, 2007. At present, sites have been identified in 55 districts with work having started on 38 locations. Of the 574 development blocks, site selection has been completed in 380 blocks. UPSWAN will consist of 885 network operating centres across the State.
