State Government plans to install dual-boot Linux desktops in TN, India

Tamil Nadu (TN) State Government has finalised a bid for 40,000 Lenovo desktops, which can be installed with both Novell's Suse Linux and Microsoft's Windows XP Starter Edition in Tamil Nadu, India. The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot) will deploy the 40,000 Lenovo desktops in all schools and government departments of the state.

 

The desktops would be installed with Suse Linux or dual-boot Windows XP Starter Edition/Suse Linux configurations, depending on the needs of the organisation. Elcot will provide the Suse Linux desktops to schools, while government employees will get dual-boot machines. Elcot has originally quoted US$492 for each Lenovo system, while dual-boot machines will cost US$497 each. Chennai-based IT company Origin Infosys will supply the Lenovo desktops. Recently, State Government announced that all government agencies across the state to switch from Microsoft Windows desktop to Linux and the OpenOffice productivity suite.
