The Cabinet of India will take up the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) Phase I for approval. The multi-million dollar project partly funded by the World Bank, would pave the way for implementation of mission mode projects for radically improving the efficiency of governance in the country through the adoption of information technology tools, if approved.

The first NeGP project – the MCA21 programme of the ministry of company affairs – has already gone on stream in several cities in the country. The cabinet will also be considering a proposal for the ITI Act amendment. The World Bank had given an in-principle nod to increase funding for a number of e-Governance projects in the country. Funds to the tune of $500 million are expected from the multilateral agency over the next four years. The cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA) may consider a special package for improving the performance of Doordarshan and All India Radio in the northeast.
