The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) has allocated 5.2 billion birr currently for infrastructural development of country's telecommunication sector.

Abdurahim Ahmed, Communication Affairs Division Manager, said ETC has set to install sufficient telecommunications infrastructure with a view to narrowing the economic rift between the rural and urban population. This rural connectivity project would provide telephone services to nearly 15,000 rural kebeles, thus reducing the 50-kms average distance rural communities travel to get telecom service to 10-kms. The manager said 17,500 customers have so far benefited from broadband Internet services. The corporation has made telephone services accessible to all most all the schools in Ethiopia.
